A popular breed – but there are health issues

Although the Pug is one of the most popular dog breeds, anyone who is considering owning one should be aware of the breed specific pug dog health care. The Pug has been around and part of mans’ life for thousands of years, and became an official part of the AKC Toy group in 1885. The Pug’s flat and wrinkly face, along with its thick body and curly tail, make it a breed which is easy to recognize. Pugs typically weigh from 13 to 20 pounds and are usually 10 to 14 inches in height. There is no denying the adorable nature of these small dogs, but their size and skin often lead to very unique health concerns that an owner has to be aware of.

One of the most common health problems for the breed is infection between the many folds of skin, and this is one that should be looked after by a veterinarian if it develops. These skin infections are easy to prevent by regular washing, to remove any excess dirt between the folds.

The breed’s eyes are another major area of Pug dog health. A Pug’s face is generally the cause of many eyesight problems, caused by the special shape and location of that part of the body. Any infection should immediately be detected through regular eye exams, and any inflammation is a reason to take your dog to the vet immediately.

If their owner permits it, Pugs will eat excessively. A Pug therefore needs to have its food carefully managed so that they do not overeat, as that can be detrimental to them in the same way that it can be for humans. Heat can bother a Pug a lot, so shade is very important to any Pug left outside, and they should never be left in a car during the summer. Never leave the breed in high heat for very long, because this will cause the dog to have difficulty in breathing.

Of course, like any dog, taking proper care of your pet and taking him to the vet for regular visits is the best way to insure good pug dog health. These adorable little dogs will provide many years of happiness for the companions that take care of them responsible.
